<br />
My (not-so) little brother got married recently, and I found the dress early on, but knew I'd want something to wear over my shoulders. On my quest for a shawl pattern, I stumbled across the<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/echo-flower-shawl" target="_blank"> Echo Flower Shawl</a> in a ravelry thread discussing the best free patterns that people would have paid for. Perfect!<br />
<br />
<br />
It was wonderfully written, easy to memorize once you got the first bit of each row going. And, the shawlette used less than a skein of Malabrigo Silkpaca. I am so pleased with it!<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've been using this rug in front of my washing machine for a few weeks now, and I love it! It's cushy without being too nubby, and doesn't travel as much as I thought it might. Feels great to cross this one off my Finish-a-Long list!<br />
<br />
A Brief How To: <br />
To begin, I cut 1" strips from pieces of quilting cotton that I knew I wouldn't use. Most came from mixed lots I bought at the thrift store, scrap bags purchased at local quilt shops, cottons of questionable quality from the remnant bin, stiff-as-a-board 70's calicoes, you name it. The beauty of this rug is that no fabric is too ugly, and all of the patterns are obscured in the finished product. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I joined the strips on my sewing machine using this method from <a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2014/04/how-to-crochet-rag-rug-with-fabric-yarn.html" target="_blank">crazy mom quilts</a>, to not have a million tails to weave in later. I must be a slow ball winder, though, because rolling them was taking me forever. So, after finishing the first ball, I dumped the next batch (in one unclipped chain) directly from the sewing machine into a bucket, and clipped the strips as I used them. Since they were all loops joined end-to-end, no tangles!</div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: justify;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg8MS60NbQmTGB3WWocL8MLyaM3MJulG3lGgfIqsk4dgqgwKCSV9cKK1faOcBiF1sbWLMCl6sBM7-IA_TliEWUcxZWXDHXP6ZuAiOgvXUpXCcG3kTem1ouaipKa6f7eCl01iDinJDNwxvv/s1600/photo+(34).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg8MS60NbQmTGB3WWocL8MLyaM3MJulG3lGgfIqsk4dgqgwKCSV9cKK1faOcBiF1sbWLMCl6sBM7-IA_TliEWUcxZWXDHXP6ZuAiOgvXUpXCcG3kTem1ouaipKa6f7eCl01iDinJDNwxvv/s1600/photo+(34).JPG" height="320" title="Crochet Rag Rug" width="225" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My bucket of joined strips.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To make an oval rug, I chained just over 20 with the biggest hook I had, a US P-15 (10mm..) I single crocheted back to the start, and then increased on the ends to go back down the opposite side. Increasing was more art than science, but I tried to do at least 4-6 on each end, varying the spacing as I went along. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At first, I carefully counted stitches between the increases, but about halfway through, I switched to using Clover clips to mark where I'd put them (and where I was planning on putting them.) </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At one point, the straight edges looked like they were pulling in a little, so I increased there. Big mistake. It made it wavy, and I had to go back and pull it out. If you use this method, keep the increases around the curves on the ends! <br />
<br />
When I ran out of scraps, I wove the tail ends through with my hook, and stretched it into shape a bit.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I weighed a yard of quilting cotton to get an idea of how much fabric was in this thing. A yard was around 6 ounces (I weighed a couple, they varied from 5.7 to 6.2), and my rug was 45. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Which means I've got about 7.5 YARDS of scraps in it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

I spend most of my time here, anyway, folding, pulling rocks out of pockets, musing over what in the world could have caused a stain like that, etc.. <br />
My good friend recently purchased a vintage Airstream to restore. It's got all the original goodies in it, and I know she's got big plans, both inside and out.<br />
<br />
For her birthday, I got a picture of it, and then went to work on this pillow. I drew it out in a simple line drawing, and then cut out the individual pieces to use as templates. I had way too much fun digging through my scraps for the perfect fabrics. As if I needed more incentive not to throw out anything, ever. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHCscXVxGb7SLXOUXAWODvvZhZtxbdGNN7DfR8jwUBO3AWG2uLFqUl7ucCVtjslSFZx8_m7wcvqAWH4VCThKbox5U3KbYNlAtJk9CoOYOUVZNsvmEp8O7M7T_VEL_hhrG0I-5ecT4lYjjw/s1600/IMG_3340.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHCscXVxGb7SLXOUXAWODvvZhZtxbdGNN7DfR8jwUBO3AWG2uLFqUl7ucCVtjslSFZx8_m7wcvqAWH4VCThKbox5U3KbYNlAtJk9CoOYOUVZNsvmEp8O7M7T_VEL_hhrG0I-5ecT4lYjjw/s1600/IMG_3340.JPG" height="326" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I pieced the ground and the sky out of solid rectangles, and attached the trees and trailer to it one piece at a time. I used a little bit of applique adhesive spray (I think spray baste would work just as well) on the backs of the pieces, and free motion quilted around all the little bits, leaving the edges raw.<br />
<br />
She's got four Jack Russell Terriers, and so I knew there needed to be four dogs. One of them does not play well with others, so he got put inside.<br />

My friend loves thrifting just as much as I do, and she is always bringing me bits of vintage sewing notions and supplies when she finds them. As a nod of thanks, I included a piece of rick-rack that came in a vintage sewing box she gave me.<br />

I had a blast making it, and I see similar projects in my future. Maybe even a quilt!<br />

<br />
The other night, I ran into the Q2 Finish Along posts at <a href="http://www.the-littlest-thistle.com/" target="_blank">The Littlest Thistle</a>, and the timing didn't leave me any excuse not to do a list of my own, as <a href="http://www.the-littlest-thistle.com/2014/07/finish-along-quarter-3-now-open.html">Q3</a> has just begun!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJOMgLTMj_GI_PjVJ85O8vyzkkyHFrBnEkOtdCSpjKAPrDyU3qXIvmVbvS_MsLAW2_DFw-rtjxDUyw9l4T-c83P9nRZo6kq5zIqJKbIZFNvfwQnCMPs2UJVgWz1TxVR6Ibn-fr54HL7kCY/s1600/FAL-2014-Button.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJOMgLTMj_GI_PjVJ85O8vyzkkyHFrBnEkOtdCSpjKAPrDyU3qXIvmVbvS_MsLAW2_DFw-rtjxDUyw9l4T-c83P9nRZo6kq5zIqJKbIZFNvfwQnCMPs2UJVgWz1TxVR6Ibn-fr54HL7kCY/s1600/FAL-2014-Button.jpg" height="200" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
So, here it is, my embarrassingly long list of half-done what-nots:<br />
<br />
1. <b>Farmers Wife.</b> Though I am quite proud of this being an actual top now (it was a stack of blocks a couple of weeks ago), it still needs to be made into a quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9C_QW54aXO6KT-ia9Kpwr5WpvHbKNMLg-VKR-wWJI2fKLbvFLp5vTg5v5NQFZfe5pfBAgzeBcHXL05tUoL-CEKrqZa6vkqwNPHlzPS0xfil1RxAdVVv7Bbh1AXBraWcDb62BskSkuTSM3/s1600/IMG_3780.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9C_QW54aXO6KT-ia9Kpwr5WpvHbKNMLg-VKR-wWJI2fKLbvFLp5vTg5v5NQFZfe5pfBAgzeBcHXL05tUoL-CEKrqZa6vkqwNPHlzPS0xfil1RxAdVVv7Bbh1AXBraWcDb62BskSkuTSM3/s1600/IMG_3780.JPG" height="320" width="268" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
2. <b>Nuptial Shawl</b>. It has nupps! I will wear this to my brother's wedding in early August. It must be done. (<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/cheekychickadee/echo-flower-shawl" target="_blank">Ravelry Linkage</a>)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
3. <b>Random Socks.</b> Gosh, I love these sock(s). But I made up the cuff pattern on my own and didn't write it down, thinking surely I'd remember. I've tried 3 times to figure it out. No go.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
4. <b>Snowball Showers.</b> A charm pack of April Showers, and some Hello Betty Green from my stash, and I had this pieced in a week...and then...it sat...and sits....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfIJogwlJUZjbkKJq1fhq7x2scD8Q5_pVoyN0g7M0KFlH6TruWtm1wT9dAja2p4DadV40vBaeBkDv2EgJobokYGvCligF9QPjXPM6ZCz4jADfRe1T0DrjxKabJ-YDII1VmK_xBFYChkz5D/s1600/photo+(30).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfIJogwlJUZjbkKJq1fhq7x2scD8Q5_pVoyN0g7M0KFlH6TruWtm1wT9dAja2p4DadV40vBaeBkDv2EgJobokYGvCligF9QPjXPM6ZCz4jADfRe1T0DrjxKabJ-YDII1VmK_xBFYChkz5D/s1600/photo+(30).JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
5. <b>Courthouse Steps</b>. We bought our log cabin as a foreclosure (Courthouse Steps, get it?) and I started this quilt in honor of the purchase after seeing one similar in a quilt shop downtown. That was in 2010. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLMLZlfXIfKhf2-833XaAviD0ZnckzKFySpG6ZwPPAt6J93l6IML2m4HGE3_A5JBcrKtGGIoTHc1-PhfGvLULTQC-6MmSDIGz9N7Z5whc039nx_43shPXLPRBcVIuRBLueM00WXGLwpli0/s1600/IMG_3786.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLMLZlfXIfKhf2-833XaAviD0ZnckzKFySpG6ZwPPAt6J93l6IML2m4HGE3_A5JBcrKtGGIoTHc1-PhfGvLULTQC-6MmSDIGz9N7Z5whc039nx_43shPXLPRBcVIuRBLueM00WXGLwpli0/s1600/IMG_3786.JPG" height="222" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
6.<b> That Star Quilt, With The Birds.</b> I liked the flowers and birds in these prints, so I bought a pair of charm packs, and then started putting it together. Mmm hmm.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIjpDIZzUs3sqP5Ib7bDLQ4BjmUqUxM963l-qjTvqg2MMCj80fY6ZCTmPmWVqkjUwk_ZYcYLdj_gaqZ6nXNjxDPaCShfvSugos_b2r4Q_7fvTmghyphenhyphenl_joOJ24ju_cWVCYBACxnjEk7fX9Y/s1600/IMG_3785.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIjpDIZzUs3sqP5Ib7bDLQ4BjmUqUxM963l-qjTvqg2MMCj80fY6ZCTmPmWVqkjUwk_ZYcYLdj_gaqZ6nXNjxDPaCShfvSugos_b2r4Q_7fvTmghyphenhyphenl_joOJ24ju_cWVCYBACxnjEk7fX9Y/s1600/IMG_3785.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
7. <b>Cathedral Windows.</b> This one is made from jeans. Fun! But not actually as fun as I thought it'd be, apparently.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN9LJYz5eNQbjPWKFl22t-tBlV76CO32m_Xdy0zH2X7bEOadmuMK5WodPhNdmspy__VsKlZPEb6DQAxugkgAIadEgJG0aLVg2yBC5QdGQORriK7ylkdZ31iNgMr-IFSCu9Cx97j6gOQgBQ/s1600/photo+(31).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN9LJYz5eNQbjPWKFl22t-tBlV76CO32m_Xdy0zH2X7bEOadmuMK5WodPhNdmspy__VsKlZPEb6DQAxugkgAIadEgJG0aLVg2yBC5QdGQORriK7ylkdZ31iNgMr-IFSCu9Cx97j6gOQgBQ/s1600/photo+(31).JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
8. <b>Postage Stamp Quilt.</b> My perpetual leaders and enders project.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMfXih5Ey9chR6uNaTcb5LqYnZd70i3PCTToRM3EvQCLilXt157d98VzsS9wz9joeRt79hpAfxwI7mwfwgniezqF0L6Q6fJmv4K9OkumDmT9-sPWrDI2gyxGZDKHz8jXCVPGE-XnGucO-r/s1600/IMG_3556.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMfXih5Ey9chR6uNaTcb5LqYnZd70i3PCTToRM3EvQCLilXt157d98VzsS9wz9joeRt79hpAfxwI7mwfwgniezqF0L6Q6fJmv4K9OkumDmT9-sPWrDI2gyxGZDKHz8jXCVPGE-XnGucO-r/s1600/IMG_3556.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
9. <b>Triple Irish Chain.</b> From my 2.5" scrap bin; no rush on this one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdiKypL8qDIdb17DKjuqVd__ojyqtekbDvSfPnECOz_HeNsm4cFq28uro3Att3oYpiSgayXaRYQOKuHsu1JrQmwqOVl3_xNXdDyFTr2UUsBjToEyx1dNSwqPz2UGnKKkp2Nv6gpVb7qJ67/s1600/IMG_3549.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdiKypL8qDIdb17DKjuqVd__ojyqtekbDvSfPnECOz_HeNsm4cFq28uro3Att3oYpiSgayXaRYQOKuHsu1JrQmwqOVl3_xNXdDyFTr2UUsBjToEyx1dNSwqPz2UGnKKkp2Nv6gpVb7qJ67/s1600/IMG_3549.JPG" height="173" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
10. <b>Crocheted Rag Rug</b>. A trillion 1" strips. Inspired by <a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2014/04/how-to-crochet-rag-rug-with-fabric-yarn.html" target="_blank">crazy mom quilts</a>, though I should have stuck with a rectangle, I'd be done now.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6ZGm_JXPv-CWDLEBmYBWQE6AtrmxyTPhIxpac5mCrjPigkPSXy1fGCeIWwtBdd2MF3HlXk2WwXzoaJlnzLDnESyAkPnqla57hyphenhyphenh3RiKD_oullx884MjdobHfmFoK1BzRHWf7emzMnzoxk/s1600/IMG_3545.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6ZGm_JXPv-CWDLEBmYBWQE6AtrmxyTPhIxpac5mCrjPigkPSXy1fGCeIWwtBdd2MF3HlXk2WwXzoaJlnzLDnESyAkPnqla57hyphenhyphenh3RiKD_oullx884MjdobHfmFoK1BzRHWf7emzMnzoxk/s1600/IMG_3545.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And that's it! I would be thrilled to have 3/10 completed...one a month. <br />
<br />
Good luck to the other finisher-hopefuls!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04334659878490696896noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3952311479093006552.post-2976111043196588102014-07-10T14:11:00.001-04:002014-07-11T10:51:13.910-04:00Storm At SeaAfter seeing a photo of a similar quilt, I became obsessed. It was one of those quilts that gets stuck in your head and you're Googling and Pinteresting until you've spent more time ogling it than you would have spent making it. <br />
<br />
I eventually found a suitable <a href="http://www.quiltmag.com/resources/quilt103-storm-at-sea/" target="_blank">free pattern</a> for the block, and went to work. Once the top was done, it sat awhile, but I finally pulled it out and quilted it last week. One of my few finishes of the summer!<br />

<br />
Made mostly from scraps and stash, I really only bought the binding, and the navy border fabric for it. I enjoyed revisiting fabrics from projects-past, as this block offers the chance to put smaller pieces to use.<br />

I quilted 1/4" from the seams on the body, and then did wavy lines with my walking foot on the border. I love the pattern it made on the back! Made all those mind-numbing 1/4" lines worth it.<br />

<br />
I had a couple of Luna Notte strips left on my cutting table after the last quilt, and decided to go ahead and use them up. I also had a leftover bit of Kona Cream, and a big enough batting scrap for a wall hanging. I ran out of cream thread on the final border, so while I'd like to say this quilt was free, I had to spring for a new spool. Oh well. Almost free.<br />
<br />
I looked online for a cross-stitch or knitting chart for the bunny, but I couldn't find one that translated well, and was the size I wanted, so I printed out some graph paper and made my own. I tried to keep it within a 10x10 square, but that little ear just popped out, so I went with 10x11, and then added a plain border, and a pieced one with my leftover squares.<br />
<br />
All the quilt squares are 2.5 inches, my HST's were done using the trim method (since I only had 2.5" strips), but I did cheat and use a couple of longer cream strips in the background.<br />
<br />
I used a brighter white for the tail, but it's kind of hard to see in the photos.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;">We've had a lot of snow (hey, for Georgia; don't laugh), and I am very ready for spring. Even though Easter is a good bit away, I think I'm going to hang this one up early.</span></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While I was at it, I also bound the crumb block from the last quilt to make a new pot holder. I used my Clover clips for the first time to machine bind. I always hand sew my binding because even with the most careful pinning, something inevitably slips. But with the clips, it turned out perfectly (no paid endorsement, here!) I stitched in the ditch from the front, so that is all done without looking on the green side. This is the first time that I haven't had a slip or a wonky stitch, and there was 3 layers of batting in that puppy! Not sure if I'm ready to do a whole quilt that way, but I would definitely do a wall hanging, and don't think I'll ever hand sew another pot holder.</div>

<br />
Last Friday, I happened to see Amy's <a href="http://www.diaryofaquilter.com/2014/01/wee-wander-free-quilt-pattern-and-big.html" target="_blank">last call</a> for the <a href="http://www.diaryofaquilter.com/p/the-virtual-quilting-bee.html" target="_blank">Virtual Quilting Bee</a>. At the start, my intention was to make the quilt from scraps on hand; half a Hometown charm pack, leftover Urban Cowgirl from a purse project, partial FQ of Oasis from my Farmer's Wife, and some random strips of Luna Notte from a Moda scrap bag. After the first five blocks though, I realized that what looked like a giant mound in my scrap bin, wasn't enough. And so, it has been sitting since last May.<br />
<br />
But then, on Sunday, I was at my LQS for Super Bolt Sunday (cute, huh?), and there it was. A partial bolt of the same yellow Oasis with a $20 sticker on it. Plenty to finish the quilt AND back it. <br />
<br />

Monday, I laid it all out on the dining room table, and started cutting. I constructed another four blocks, added the setting triangles, sashing, and border. Pieced my backing, pieced my binding, and quilted it all up. </div>

But there really weren't many tears when I sat down to my sewing machine in an empty house last week. They all left for school and work, and I could hear my own thoughts again. Ahhh....<br />
<br />
My Bernina was out for a tune-up, so I did some quilting on the beast. Lots of it.<br />
<br />
I finally finished the flannel <a href="http://cabinfibers.blogspot.com/2013/04/works-in-progress-wednesday.html" target="_blank">Man Quilt</a>. I used Woolies by Maywood Studio almost exclusively for the front and back (I think one of the reds is something else). It's got an interesting feel to it, it really does feel like wool without the scratchy bit. I did a regular cotton binding, though, as I was worried about it being super thick.<br />

That little maze quilting pattern took forever, and then some. So proud to have this finished! Still need to wash it, though. There's a laundry backlog with all the sewing going on.<br />
<br />
I also got out a kaleidoscope quilt top that I finished well over a year (or two) ago. Quilted and bound!<br />

Last but not least, and before she started middle school, I was able to get my friend's daughter's<a href="http://cabinfibers.blogspot.com/2013/04/works-in-progress-wednesday.html" target="_blank"> graduation quilt</a> to her. I'd never made a t-shirt quilt before, it was fun trying something new. The back and binding is Kona Black, and it's stitched in the ditch. I toyed with the idea of an all-over design, but couldn't think of how to make it work with all the crazy colors. Pretty cute.<br />

<i><br /></i>
<i>I know you're probably busy blog hopping, I will be too in a bit, so I'll try not keep you long!</i><br />
<br />
I love vintage notions, and look for sewing bits whenever I'm at an estate sale or thrift store. They often tell such great stories about their owners. Once, I bought a sewing box at an auction that belonged to a nurse, she had suture silk, surgical blades, and bandage scissors stashed in there, along with a bullet casing! Clearly, your imagination must be a large part of the story. I've found old letters, Girl Scout patches that never got sewn on, promotional needle books from banks, campaign buttons; all sorts of treasure! I even found template pieces cut from old newspaper that someone had bought from another quilter for $0.25...by mail...almost half the price of a stamp today.<br />
<br />
I display what I can in my sewing room, but my collecting has gotten a bit out of hand.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
For some reason, I had trouble with #4, my machine (always blame the machine) kept eating the edge of my fabric when attaching the squares on the bias. Even with a leader. She never does that. I'm thinking I may need to change the needle and tune her up a bit. Anyway, it pulled in places, but overall, lined up at the points well enough to call it done. The fact that the dots weren't printed on the grain evenly bothers me too. Oh well.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
Several years ago, we took my oldest to Build-a-Bear for his birthday. And for some reason, this week, the bears have made a comeback in popularity. Perhaps it's a last ditch attempt at saving them from the spring cleaning donation frenzy? And yesterday, my youngest informed me that his bear didn't like sleeping in his hockey uniform. Could I please make him some new clothes? <br />
<br />
A quick Google search, and I had a<a href="http://www.itsalwaysautumn.com/home/2012/5/31/sew-stuffed-animal-jammies-free-pattern.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> free pattern for pajamas</a>. I love it when people share (thank you, <i>it's always autumn</i>!)<br />
<br />
I let both boys raid the box of old clothes we had waiting to be donated. Evan came up with one of his Dad's flannel shirts, and Ryan found a pair of his own outgrown pajama pants.<br />
<br />
For Ryan's, I cut the pattern on the cuff of the pants, to reuse the hem. I wasn't as lucky with the shirt Evan chose, but the flannel didn't fray much, so I just turned them under once.<br />
<br />
The pattern is super easy to use, one piece of paper, no taping.<br />
<br />
I did my elastic using a trick I learned in a serger class. You don't need a serger to do it, though. It works especially well for tiny clothes like this, where double turning a casing and threading the elastic can be kind of tedious.<br />
<br />
First, you mark your elastic (cut to final size) in quarters, with pins. Then, starting at the front seam, you zig-zag (or serge) your elastic to the<b> right </b>side of your waistband, stretching it as you go. Use the pins in the elastic to line it up with the four seams of your garment.<br />
<br />

Though why, I don't know. Our house is loud and full of boys that slam the back door, and throw sticks in the yard. But for years, a cardinal family had made their nest there, and this year, they got a few twigs laid down before a robin came to claim it. <br />
<br />
She is one hard worker. <br />

This one reminded me of one of the blocks from my Farmers Wife quilt. I really like the traditional look of it. <br />
<br />
After much mulling over the green/blue/green-blue in the last block, I've decided to embrace all shades together. With sashing, I think they'll get along after all.<br />

Been trying to do some spring cleaning, so not much to show and tell about!<br />
<br />
But here are the few projects I've been sneaking in between dusting, washing, organizing, and tossing. At least when quilts are done, they stay done. Unlike my cleaning efforts.<br />

I knew there wasn't going to be, but I really didn't want to have to put away all the fabric I got out auditioning for the first block. I'm great at getting out, but putting away is not my forte. Unfortunately, I think my children have inherited this gene. <br />
<br />
Anyway, new block today, yay!<br />
<br />
It's a fun one. Kind of reminds me of a card trick block.<br />

<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One day, I was looking on eBay for a used serger. I was mainly searching for a Bernina because I was confident that even an older model would be sturdy and run well. I wanted it for finishing unlined garments, and making kids' Halloween costumes. Nothing fancy. The machines I was looking at were 20+ years old, and probably hadn't been used in half as long. But my husband caught wind of what I was doing, and went out an bought me a brand spankin' new one as a gift.</div>
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My first Bernina, the 700D</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The sweet ladies at the sewing machine store, also told my poor man that this machine is excellent for quilting (ha!) He brought her home and I attempted my very first quilt with her. Needless to say, the points (nubs!) on my pinwheels didn't exactly lay very flat. I felt a little guilty for having a machine that cost twice what my regular machine, a EuroPro Shark, did at the time. Especially when I couldn't even make a simple quilt on it. So, my husband "fixed" it by going out and buying me a proper quilting machine. The Bernina Activa 230PE...the PE is for Patchwork Edition (and if you ask me, PErfect!)<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The #57 Foot</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
And this is why I wouldn't trade her for the world...the #57 Patchwork Foot. A true 1/4" seam without even trying! See the little arm on the right side? It lines up your fabric for you. Genius!<br />
<br />
But after making a quilt or two, I discovered her Kryptonite. She's petite, and it's almost impossible for me to quilt a big quilt on her with her itty bitty harp size. So, my husband fixed that, too, and found a mid-arm Babylock on Craigslist for me.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Baby Lock Quilter's Choice Professional</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
My favorite thing about this one is the power. She can GO! And she has a thread cutting feature that I've gotten spoiled by. She also has an even feed pin that's neat, but I mostly use her for FMQ'ing.<br />
<br />
Even though I didn't pick any of these out for myself, they couldn't be any more fitting. They are fantastic machines, but also remind me how lucky I am to have someone who supports me and my interests, even when he doesn't share them.<br />
<br />
And he puts up with my disaster of a sewing room. He's a keeper.<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
I saw the first block for<a href="http://www.diaryofaquilter.com/p/the-virtual-quilting-bee.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> Diary of a Quilter's Virtual Quilting Bee</a> earlier this morning, and then got out some Farmer's Wife blocks to work on. But while I was rummaging through my bins, I came along this stack of Hometown charms, and some Urban Cowgirl I had put with it, and that star block was calling my name.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So, I have begun yet another new project. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Even though I've made this block before, I usually don't take the time to trim all of my HST's. But for this one, I decided to do it the "right" way. I admit, it did come together well. However, as I was cruising along, I accidentally trimmed the top right block on the wrong side! Ooops! It's a little short (~1/16"), but it'll work out into the seam allowances. I made sure the points still ended up in the right spot. I would have cut another one, but I used 2 of my 5" charms (3" x 3" each), and didn't have extras.</div>

We spend a lot of time in the car going to and from the cabin, which means we may or may not be eating food in there. And I desperately needed a way to contain the trash that accumulates. Particularly in the back seat, where some little boys sit. So, I made a slightly smaller version of this <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2009/06/grocery-bag-despenser-tutorial.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">grocery bag holder</a> from a few extra charm squares. The charms were assembled in rows, and then sliced and rearranged before being resewn into a block.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHYAEEW5Kh3hoNRsBUHttDNe2rTpDaE8ydJT_nA-bBdIe1DI9UuG6ljRuoHA_4ZA-p6vnOpXfgTDZs9fEUmO8JkJ552EK5DQT-Sii3I3VvpsFb4wl_52wEwLVwmYL8vcfluN9f9-4vVIiM/s1600/collagebag.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHYAEEW5Kh3hoNRsBUHttDNe2rTpDaE8ydJT_nA-bBdIe1DI9UuG6ljRuoHA_4ZA-p6vnOpXfgTDZs9fEUmO8JkJ552EK5DQT-Sii3I3VvpsFb4wl_52wEwLVwmYL8vcfluN9f9-4vVIiM/s400/collagebag.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Looking a little lumpy with all those bags stuffed in it.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I used my serger for the final seam, but I don't love it. At the top around the elastic, it's bulky. I plan on making another one (or two, or three), and will change that next time. I'll probably still serge the inside, just stop before the end.<br />
<br />
But, it's perfectly useful, and headed for the back seat. Now the trick is training them on how to use it.<br />
<br />
My second finish is a little knitting project that took much longer than it should have. It got lost in my knitting pile. <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/cheekychickadee/lotus-hat-2" target="_blank">The Asheville Hat</a>!<br />

<br />
Malabrigo is soft, washes well, has lovely colors, but one of my favorite things about it, is how much I always have left over! I think I've got enough for mitts or maybe a small cowl. Love that.<br />
<br />
Next up, a little <a href="http://aquilterstable.blogspot.com/2012/08/triple-zip-pouch-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Triple Zip</a> pouch for my Nana's birthday (shhh...I just mailed it.) I used an <a href="http://www.marcigirldesigns.com/1/post/2013/01/triple-zip-pouch-an-alternate-ending-tutorial.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">alternate method</a> for the last seam, since I had some trouble last time. It's similar to my regular pouch making method, and went a bit more smoothly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghoiMCoYOePCb8CYdVURnUrxbPOUHqjL5QguTcu_a5Ciolo8dbqvBvlOJj_-L6RPkMUvvg6pWdCwAWICkwGZcRfKHRmYoJVbKRWtN4rqUd9mCIEaxItvJB5mda2G12VmiIgWSwOJryTP1J/s1600/IMG_9872.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghoiMCoYOePCb8CYdVURnUrxbPOUHqjL5QguTcu_a5Ciolo8dbqvBvlOJj_-L6RPkMUvvg6pWdCwAWICkwGZcRfKHRmYoJVbKRWtN4rqUd9mCIEaxItvJB5mda2G12VmiIgWSwOJryTP1J/s400/IMG_9872.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally; impulse-buy fabric, a couple zippers, and three boys out ice skating; equals a perfect storm for some new couch pillows!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghxKQubP4_fA2icF8KdO_ZP6oS9CHMvb6I8sWYdJcKjrpPvcjy5LcVc6xVfBBXjsGEXhRWRXj-J80IPPTbLOEfwHluzqg_f-g0Rw9iA4ShS5LsxJ6tD81yBEkF40xElPOxsG86wzLGRuDM/s1600/IMG_9723.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="258" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghxKQubP4_fA2icF8KdO_ZP6oS9CHMvb6I8sWYdJcKjrpPvcjy5LcVc6xVfBBXjsGEXhRWRXj-J80IPPTbLOEfwHluzqg_f-g0Rw9iA4ShS5LsxJ6tD81yBEkF40xElPOxsG86wzLGRuDM/s400/IMG_9723.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The stripe was a result of me being cheap and only buying *just* enough for two pillows. I had to center the medallions, and ended up a bit short on doing solid fronts and backs. <br />
<br />
I also tried a new zipper method. I basted the opening, applied the zipper to the back, and then removed the basting. I liked it, but on the bottom of a pillow like this, where it naturally folds open, a small flap may have been neater. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiBmA9FKA8FDzuSFSGEPVh1DERCnYnafDmDTpNVJLIUwemZhBsT880TYdFFrpsPztfDh2aBQ5h-KmvAuUdxJHqj3osYGqWG-ciBSUImhISLCP302i9oNUdoitJwBLasDkCPXp8m7uK81BO/s1600/IMG_9732.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="148" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiBmA9FKA8FDzuSFSGEPVh1DERCnYnafDmDTpNVJLIUwemZhBsT880TYdFFrpsPztfDh2aBQ5h-KmvAuUdxJHqj3osYGqWG-ciBSUImhISLCP302i9oNUdoitJwBLasDkCPXp8m7uK81BO/s400/IMG_9732.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
No doubt they'll need replacing before too long, anyway! Pillows don't spend much time on the sofa here.<br />
<br />
That's it for this week. Happy Friday!<br />

<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small; text-align: start;"> Please excuse the un-trim-ed-ness...this is a rough draft.</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I think I've decided on the suggested on-point layout. I considered doing every-other-block, but there aren't any that I really mind, maybe other than Pine Tree, on the diagonal.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFF0t4bLsOSAnEkLTluxC9cNcIZ4TQfKgtvssRQjSVrde3ahh2uwPSbAyHEpxcaFH7n5KU9wzLE1zFAHEq9aV8jhX6G0ZSNfvfvkzQAsCIw50qg-AkBYkSsEr3A8IurWfLbqanvXCaIdJ2/s1600/IMG_97782.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="406" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFF0t4bLsOSAnEkLTluxC9cNcIZ4TQfKgtvssRQjSVrde3ahh2uwPSbAyHEpxcaFH7n5KU9wzLE1zFAHEq9aV8jhX6G0ZSNfvfvkzQAsCIw50qg-AkBYkSsEr3A8IurWfLbqanvXCaIdJ2/s640/IMG_97782.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Still need a row or two.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihflcfQpZIGwDr0MjR08mZu96ziyQwEsYRwtWWtT55Kr3q_fzRd3DoBuDZtzUGp5kIcLvOy8ZSOP421o8HDJZCQv8mO1Jtn-Rr_Z7wLPT20r9pC29qmgvuayi9u917FjDLxmzu6HNbxYSu/s1600/IMG_9780.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihflcfQpZIGwDr0MjR08mZu96ziyQwEsYRwtWWtT55Kr3q_fzRd3DoBuDZtzUGp5kIcLvOy8ZSOP421o8HDJZCQv8mO1Jtn-Rr_Z7wLPT20r9pC29qmgvuayi9u917FjDLxmzu6HNbxYSu/s640/IMG_9780.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And I think I may use the navy from this block, for the sashing corners, to break up the pink a little.<br />

Last week, I found this "new" LeeWards pincushion set at our thrift store for $2.49. The wool is so bright and saturated, the pictures really don't do it justice. </div>

<br />
I wish they still made stuff like this. I like embroidery too, but there's something about crewel. Maybe it's the linen and wool, it reminds me of my Granny. She bought me a kit like this when I was 5, to teach me to stitch. It was a gaudy parrot, and I had the best time doing it. I even had golden stork scissors, which were my prized possession for many, many, years. Granny always told me not to cut paper with them, and I listened. But I probably opened glue bottles, snipped plastic canvas, and otherwise abused them. My husband bought me the Gingher pair in the photo several years ago when the others were too rusted to cut thread.<br />
<br />
I changed the colors around a bit. Wasn't feeling the rust orange for my sewing room. I've got my eye on the bee and flower next. It has a turkey work stitch I haven't tried yet. The excitement never really ends over here.<br />

<br />
It's lived on and off my couch. But was recently adopted by a boy with a cold. After the boy recovered from the cold, the quilt never made it back to the couch. And after a recent washing, the quilt was smuggled back to the bunk bed of this boy. <br />

Poor asthmatic boy is sick again. Another cold. I can't do anything for him but give him love and hold his inhaler for him until he recovers. So, I decided to add the missing piece to my friendship star quilt.<br />

He came over while I was stitching, and asked what I was doing. I said, "Well, I can't decide whether this should say Mom or Mommy." When he realized it was for him, he gave me a hug, and said, "MOMMY!" That's better than just about anything from a very cool 9 year old, don't you think?<br />

<br />
I think I set a personal best for speed on this one. Feburary 3rd to 20th, 17 days! I did a simple crosshatch pattern (every other diagonal) to quilt it, and stitched in the ditch around the borders. My only regret is not using a solid for the binding. I picked out the red check when I was doing plain navy borders, and I should have reevaluated when I went for scrappy borders. It's a little busy. Oh well.<br />

This weekend was my good friend Janet's birthday. She's a crafty girl, and homemade gift worthy, so I always try to make her a little something. This year, it was an embroidered flour sack towel for her cabin. It was freezing out this weekend, so I had some time to add a little extra to it. </div>

The kids are off from school for President's Day today, but I still snuck upstairs to do a little sewing while they played Pokemon.<br />
<br />
<div>
I had a stack of 2.5" squares leftover from cutting my 16" strips from the width of my fabric, so I decided to put them to use. I was amazed that they made it all the way around with some to spare! I had already cut 3" strips from the navy dot, so I just cut those in half. I still plan on using the red check binding, but I like this better than my original plan for a solid border. Hopefully the boys will give me a little time for pressing it later on today. Progress!</div>

Now I have become *that* parent. And I am confident my children will never understand why I need a bin full of zippers.<br />
<br />
I can't pass by a bag of them at the thrift store without snatching them up. The problem is not that I have too many, but that I can no longer close the bin. Maybe the bin is the problem.<br />
<br />
One day, when I'm dead and gone, my children will donate my bin to the thrift store. Full circle.<br />

<br />
Anyway, when I saw this project on <a href="http://aquilterstable.blogspot.com/2012/08/triple-zip-pouch-tutorial.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">A Quilters Table</a>, it called to me. Three zippers! So clever!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My Three Zip Pouch</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I had a little bit of trouble with the last step. It looks great from the outside, but just under the top corners, it got a little sloppy with the fold and sew method. It closes, just not as neatly as I'd like. Next time I'll cut the largest lining into two pieces (13"/2 = 6.5" x 8), and sew it together at the end, like I do for regular pouches. <br />
<br />
The tutorial was super easy to follow, and well written. The last step thing was probably just me. The most time consuming bit was changing my 1/4" foot to my edge stitching foot after each step. Well, that and picking out zippers and fabric.<br />
<br />
Will be making another for sure.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04334659878490696896noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3952311479093006552.post-56191046693661188562013-02-13T16:28:00.000-05:002013-02-24T19:34:44.933-05:00Asheville We took a little road trip to Asheville this weekend. Biltmore was great, but one of the true highlights was when we stopped to pick up chicken minis in a local mall. Chicken minis are a Chick-fil-A staple, a buttery yeast roll with fried chicken on it, doesn't get much better. Except, there was a yarn shop. IN THE MALL.<br />
<br />
And not just any <a href="https://friendsandfiberworks.com/" target="_blank">yarn shop</a>, a really nice, nicely stocked one, with nice people.<br />
<br />
That is how I came to start yet another <a href="http://ravel.me/cheekychickadee/lh2" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">hat</a>:<br />
